Bear Rugs Used To Accent Wildlife Decor
There are many people who like lying around on large, life-sized bear rugs in front of their fireplace. In fact, they may like it so much they have smaller ones for their children to lounge round on. Whether they are white polar bear rugs or one imitating a brown or black grizzly bear, they are often made of imitation materials as a means of preserving the wildlife while still representing the wild décor in their house.
Perhaps originally used in hunting cabins or lodges as a trophy display, the use of bear rugs for display purposes only has diminished greatly in recent years. There are certain areas in which their use is still widely accepted but as the bear population has declined, hunting the animals for sport, or for food, has been less frequent in recent years. This has promoted the use of faux fur materials in their manufacture and added to their acceptance among some in the country.
In some other countries, the use of bear rugs is still acceptable, especially when the rug is a tanned hide properly prepared by a taxidermist, but still mane in other countries are against the use of animals hides as decorations in a house.
Companies Still Offer Rugs For Shy Hunters
For the person who wants the real thing, but is not going to head into the wilderness to trap their own bear rugs, many companies will provide them with real bear skin rugs, complete with prepared head, usually preserved with an open mouth full of sharp teeth. Most companies claims the bear rugs are made from animals humanely trapped in areas where their population is abundant and their aggressiveness has made them a danger to surrounding populations.
The thickness of the fur on bear rugs will depend on the areas in which they were trapped with those in colder climates having a thinker layer of fur. Brown seems to be the dominant color in bear rugs used as fireplace accessories or in decoration for hunting lodges and camps. Costing as much as small car, these bear rugs offer the appearance that many manufactured rugs cannot come close to imitating.
Those looking for the real thing in the way of bear rugs have the option of finding their own bear and having it prepared for use inside their home or cabin. For others who want to look and appeal of bear rugs can choose those made in a factory, without harm to the environmental population of the species.
